How It Works

The integration connects your Sanity Studio directly to your Crowdin project through a combination of a Sanity plugin and a backend webhook handler. You'll need a Sanity project with the @sanity/document-internationalization plugin already configured, plus API access to both platforms.

Setup Requirements

Your Sanity project needs to be configured for internationalization first - the plugin builds on top of Sanity's official i18n support rather than replacing it. On the Crowdin side, you'll need a project with API access and webhook permissions.

Integration Process

Once installed, the plugin injects a translation dashboard directly into your Sanity documents. When you open any document marked as translatable, you'll see a new "Crowdin Translation" section alongside your regular content fields. From there, you select target languages and click "Send to Crowdin" to upload the document.

The plugin converts your Sanity document into HTML format and creates it as a file in Crowdin. At the same time, it generates read-only target documents in Sanity for each requested language. These act as placeholders that will receive the translated content.

Real-time Synchronization

As translators work in Crowdin, webhooks automatically push updates back to your Sanity documents. The integration monitors specific Crowdin events - when translations are updated, files are approved, or content is deleted - and mirrors these changes in your CMS. This means you can see translation progress without leaving Sanity Studio.

When translation completes, the target documents become fully editable, allowing your content team to make final adjustments or continue with content updates in the translated versions.
