Screen Capture BetaFree

Chrome extension to capture screenshots from any web page and upload them to your Crowdin project for context.

Screen Capture is a Chrome extension that lets you capture screenshots directly from your web app and upload them to your Crowdin project.

If you localize web UI, screenshots give translators and AI agents essential visual context—so they know exactly where each string appears and how it should be translated. While we recommend automated screenshot collection where possible, this extension is the ideal solution for manual captures and maintaining visual context as your app changes.

Key Features

  • Multiple Capture Modes: Capture the Whole Page, drag to select a specific Area, or use the Element Picker to capture a specific UI component. A draggable floating toolbar stays on the page for quick repeat captures.
  • Smart Naming: The extension automatically generates human-readable names based on the page's DOM (prioritizing data-testid, element id, headings, or aria-label) combined with the URL path.
  • Seamless Updates: When your app's UI changes, simply recapture the updated area. The extension detects existing screenshots in your Crowdin project by name and lets you auto-update them or always create new ones.
  • Instant Context & Auto-tagging: Screenshots upload directly to your project's Screenshots tab. The extension then calls Crowdin's auto-tag API to automatically match visible strings in the screenshot (with optional scope for branch, directory, or file), so translators see the context immediately.
  • Label-based Filtering: Narrow auto-tagging to strings with specific labels, configured in the extension popup or the upload prompt.

Technical Limitations & Permissions

This extension uses Chrome's native debugging tools to capture high-quality screenshots. Please note the following technical restrictions:

  • Max image height: Chrome limits image textures. Very tall pages (over ~8,000 CSS pixels on Retina displays) will be clipped at the bottom.
  • Debugging banner: While capturing, Chrome briefly displays an "Extension is debugging this browser" warning at the top of the window. This is normal and disappears automatically.
  • Single debugger limit: The extension cannot capture a page if another tool (or Chrome DevTools) is actively debugging that specific tab.
  • Privacy & Permissions: Chrome shows a standard warning ("Read and change all your data...") upon installation due to the required debugger permission. We do not use analytics or third-party trackers; data is strictly sent to the Crowdin API for authentication and screenshot uploading.
